IT WAS like stepping into a theatre in the WI tent this year, as each group had taken a musical and turned it into a display.

But Jacobstow WI came up with a ‘loverly’ display themed around the beloved musical, My Fair Lady.

The team brought together a stunning and cohesive display that ultimately won them The Penhale Cup.

There was more cause for celebration when Jacobstow WI member Pat Lane was awarded The Challenge Trophy for the individual exhibit that gained top marks of 20 points. Pat was delighted and said: “We all went on our strengths and opted to do the category we felt fit our skill set most. I was absolutely delighted when I received 20 out of 20 for my evening bag.”

President of Jacobstow WI Jill Baker was also delighted, not just for Pat, but that all her ladies’ efforts had been rewarded with the overall highest marks in the tent. She said: “At 7am this morning we started setting up, with final work being done just the day before to make sure everything was show ready. We had seven ladies, from the 22 members we have, involved and it tends to be what people’s forté is in the group that decides which items they will do.”

For their display Jill made the poster, Pat made the evening bag and the chutney, Barbara Parsons created the drinks, Jen Spettigue made jewellery from recycled materials, Pauline Hendle made the fan, Anne Wilton arranged the flowers and Marion Reason made the trio of desserts.

Jill said: “It is a lot of work but it is all worth it. We have lots of meetings to see how everything will fit together, to decide what everyone would like to do and most importantly to vote on the theme. The theme this year was ‘a musical’ and we listed a few we thought would be good and that we could do well, then held a vote and chose My Fair Lady.”

She added: “We tried to make the theme run all the way through the display, from the drinks she would have and the hat she would wear to Ascot — we are delighted with the result we got after all our hard work.”

The other worthy winners were Week St Mary Bonaventures WI who received the The Silver Rose Bowl, for best display and The People’s Choice Trophy, a new category this year voted for by the public.
