THE members of Bude Women’s Institute continued with their 95th birthday celebrations by taking part in a 95-mile walk on Thursday, June 28.

The objective was for each member to walk a distance of their choice and the grand total to be 95 miles or more. Various pre-measured routes along and around Bude canal were chosen with a total of 66 members taking part.

Walkers set off in groups or as individuals throughout the day from Bude Masonic Hall, which acted as the base for the event. Being one of the hottest days of the year, ample supplies of cold drinks, cups of tea and of course homemade cakes were available.

The members were extremely proud of their efforts with the oldest participant being 88 and the vast majority of the walkers being over 65.

When everyone had completed their chosen route it was discovered that not only was 95 miles easily exceeded, but almost doubled with a total 181 miles being walked.

Event organisers Margaret Reeve and Mary Hallett were delighted with the turn out of members, especially as the weather was so hot. It was one of the biggest gatherings of members this year outside regular meeting days and all agreed it was great fun and a fitting celebration of 95 years of Bude WI.
