ST STEPHENS by Launceston WI held a coffee morning at the Central Methodist Church on October 22 with the majority of funds raised going towards local charity, Freddy’s Fund.

Mayor of Launceston, Councillor Dave Gordon, is aiming to raise around £4,000 to provide two-year-old Freddy Jackson with a specialised bed which will help as his needs constantly change.

Freddy and his twin brother Bobby suffered from twin to twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). This caused an uneven blood flow between the twins, with Bobby receiving more nutrients and fluid. Bobby, the recipient twin, grew too big whilst Freddy, the donor twin, grew too slowly. The boys were born in May 2017 by caesarean but sadly Bobby was born sleeping.

Upon meeting Freddy and his parents Rebecca Jefferies and Andrew Jackson back in May, Cllr Gordon chose to create Freddy’s Fund with the aim of raising £4,000 towards a specially adapted bed, and has been raising money ever since.

St Stephens by Launceston president, Louise Finn, explains why she chose Freddy’s Fund as her charity for the year.

She said: “I was at the Mayor’s Choosing when Cllr Gordon announced what his charity was going to be. It broke my heart listening.

“When you look at your own children you realise how lucky we are to have what we’ve got.

“Freddy’s a local lad and we’re a local WI so it’s good to support something local as you know where the money is going.”

Held between 9.30am and 11.30am, there was a superb turnout with £324.85 raised and £200 going towards Freddy’s Fund.

Louise said: “It was quite busy, the busy it’s been for a long while.

“We had a tombola, the raffle went well and the cake stall sold out.

We had cakes and savouries, a tombola with lots of produce and various bits and pieces.

“The raffle prizes included a tweed handbag, a knitted teddy bear, a Lola Rose necklace and the craft stall had knitted items, candles bags and bracelets.

“I’d like to thank everyone that attended and made it successful, and to everyone who contributed towards it.”
