THE 1st Holsworthy Beaver Scouts took part in ‘Beaver Damboree’ recently, an idea of Andy Sissons, the Scout Association’s UK technical advisor for nights away, who believes every Beaver should have the opportunity to camp under canvas.

Andy set up the initiative to try and get as many Beavers as possible camping out over the weekend of June 22 to 24, dispelling the myth that ‘Beavers can not camp’.

There were many Beaver groups holding their own camps all across the country.

Holsworthy Beavers and their leaders, who are no strangers to greenfield camping — camping with no plumbed in facilities — took part in a two night pirate themed camp, and enjoyed making pirate hats, swords, hooks, eyepatches and neckers as well as sailing paper boats in the river and building a dam.

The Beavers were joined on Saturday evening, June 23, by Mother Elizabeth Burke for the traditional camp fire and songs and finished the camp on Sunday morning with a treasure hunt to find the keys to the ‘Pirate Treasure Chest’ — the wrong key resulted in Beavers having to walk the plank!

Beavers were joined on camp by scout leader Malcolm Withall and a team of Scouts, who kept everyone well fed and watered all weekend, as well as teaching the Beavers fire lighting skills.

A spokesperson for the event said: “Everyone had an amazing weekend, and we are looking forward to an even bigger camp next year!”

Holsworthy Scout Group is always on the look out for volunteers to join the team across all sections and help to keep Holsworthy Scouting going.

If anyone would like to join in the fun contact group scout Leader Pauline Masters for information.
