THE service of Remembrance at the village war memorial in Whitstone to mark the centenary of the ending of the Great War was led by Peter Parsons.

After the Last Post the two minutes’ silence was observed.

Mervyn Collins read out the names of those who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. Phyllis Walter and Lucy Burrows laid wreaths on behalf of the village. Sarah Deere Jones brought her horse adorned with his poppy which was a poignant reminder of all the horses that served and died during the war. Tea and coffee was served afterwards in the parish hall.

At 7pm another event, Battle’s Over, was organised by the parish council. After the Last Post was sounded Cllr Richard Horn read the names that are on the memorial and spoke of the ultimate sacrifice they had paid.

Mervyn, Phil Colwill, Derek Orchard, Judith Taylor, Brian Marshall and Jack Waddington then rang the church bells and the bonfire beacon was lit.

Many parishioners enjoyed the warmth of the flames that were fanned by the strong breeze. Thanks were expressed to the Medland family for the use of their field. Soup and rolls were served to more than 60 people who had come along to pay their respects. Thanks were also expressed to the parish councillors for organising this memorable event.
