PEOPLE in the Launceston, Bude, and Holsworthy areas are to be asked what they think plans to re-introduce the railway line which was axed by the infamous Dr Beeching in the 1960s.

Launceston Town Council was given a presentation at the recent town council meeting from Dr Michael Ireland, who was promoting Okehampton Parkway on behalf of Devon and Cornwall Railway.

A survey is being carried out to see what people think of the idea of re-introducing a railway line to the area.

The North Cornwall / West Devon old line is being used as a catchment area for the survey which includes settlements of Halwill; Hatherleigh; Holsworthy; Launceston and Bude.

Dr Ireland said: "It would make Launceston and Holsworthy less remote."

The Devon and Cornwall Railway, which will operate the service, has been formed by American railway company Iowa Pacific Holdings.

Dr Ireland, also a councillor on Okehampton Town Council, discussed the possible times and routes that could be delivered from Okehampton Parkway. He said there could be a seven day a week service from Okehampton to Exeter.

Dr Ireland added: "It is an extremely attractive option and an affordable and attractive service in difficult economic times."

Cllr Brian Keighley questioned the benefits to the town: "From Launceston we can go straight to Exeter by bus."

He said that if people used the service they would have to carry their shopping and use a bus which coincides with train times.

Dr Ireland explained he understood that there are good bus services to Exeter, but it would also be a good connection to places such as London with shorter waiting times.

Cllr Mary Williams said that she can get to Exeter by bus using her free ticket and then catches the train to London.

Dr Ireland said the American company had looked at the compulsory measures and it would be quite straightforward. There could also be discounts and they are looking at making fares competitive.

Cllr John Conway suggested a parkway being placed in Launceston rather than Okehampton as he believed more people would use it.

"If it ever comes about it would be wonderful for Launceston."

Results from the survey will then be collated and given at a presentation at the end of November. Councils from all the communities will be invited to attend.

Dr Ireland will also be giving a presentation at the next Holsworthy Town Council meeting on November 3, when he will be accompanied by Cllr Christine Marsh (chair of Devon County Council) and Mr Graham Isom (manager for Dartmoor Railway).
