The eldest competitor in Launceston Lions’ fun run was greeted by the Mayor, Mr Arthur Wills, and Lions’ President, Mr Monty Lowther. Mr John Mazur, of Lifton, who will be 71 next month, jogs up to six miles once or twice a week, but excelled himself by completing the 13.1 miles.

Following their Executive Council meeting on Friday night, the North Cornwall Conservative Association announced they have unanimously agreed to recommend Mrs Trixie Gardner for adoption as prospective Conservative candidate for North Cornwall.

An old-established firm of R H Moon and Son at Ashwater has been sold and the business how leaves the Moon family after 100 years. The shop has been run lately by three brothers, Messrs A E, J and P Moon.

September 29, 1962

A report on the proposed water scheme for Otterham and Marshgate, presented to North Cornwall Water Board at Wadebridge, on Friday, by the consulting engineers, gave the estimated cost of £18,500.

The clerk, Mr P D Sugar, said that since the decision had been made to close the Calstock-Bere Alston Ferry, on December 31, a petition against the proposal had been received, signed by 724 people over the age of 21.

September 27, 1952

Holsworthy Fire Brigade, PC Howell of Milton Damerell, and other people of the parish rushed to the aid of Mr Godfrey Blight when a fire broke out in his farmhouse at Higher Grawley, Milton Damerell.

The restoration of North Petherwin church bells and tower on Saturday brought to a happy ending the united efforts over the past two years of all parishioners, church and chapel.

October 3, 1942

Stratton Farmers’ Union, meeting on Tuesday with Mr W Lucas presiding, learnt from the county secretary (Mr F M Jesty) that a vegetable dehydration plant is shortly to be installed in Cornwall and should increase the demand for spring cabbage in particular.

Mrs B Rundle reported to Camelford WI that nearly 500lbs of jam had been made at their jam centre to date.

October 7, 1932

Miss Megan Sobey of Derriton has been elected Carnival Queen of Holsworthy. Last year’s carnival at Holsworthy produced a profit of £121 for charity.

Considerable concern was felt by the farming community over the prices realised at the Cattle Market at Callington on Wednesday (Honey Fair Day). It was the worst ever known, with fat sheep selling from 1s to 25s, breeding ewes 18s to 31s, calves 10s to 60s, representing a drop of half on the last monthly market.

October 7, 1922

When Boasley Cross Council School was re-opened on Monday, after the last outbreak of diptheria, only one scholar attended and the Headmaster had no option but to close again. At a meeting previously held, the parents decided they would not send their children to school until effective steps had been taken to prevent any further dptheria outbreaks.

Sir Arthur Quilter Couch presided at a County Council Enquiry at Kiklhampton on Tuesday, concerning the amalgamation of the village’s two schools. The Church of England School (built in 1853) has 86 scholars and the Council School (1855) 61.
