Amongst the noisy, angry protesters against the cutbacks at Launceston Hospital last Wednesday was the daughter of a couple who helped buy the bricks to build the facility in 1937. Rhoda Castle was just 13 when her mother and father contributed towards the cost of the building, and proudly held their reward badge at the demonstration rally in the hospital gardens.

Amid the season of ghosts and ghouls, Launceston Carnival brought plenty of treats to the thousands who lined the town on Saturday to watch a varied and colourful procession. This was its 30th year.

There was an unexpected hitch at last night’s Launceston Carnival procession when Launceston Castle got stuck under Southgate Arch! What actually got stuck was the Launceston Guides’ tableau depicting the Castle and the Cornish Gorsedd ceremony which took place there earlier this year. The float was voted best in carnival.

An Argente Blue Rabbit from Mrs D M Webb’s Eastash stud, Bradworthy, won its breed class and certificate of merit at the Royal Dairy Show.
Winning the ladies’ solo championship, a St Teath competitor received special praise for her singing on the first day of the 35th annual music festival at Indian Queens. She was Miss M Jolliffe.

November 1, 1952
Mr Thomas Lewis Horabin, of Queensway, London, former Liberal and Labour MP for North Cornwall, was seriously injured in an aeroplane crash in Kent in 1947 and this week the hearing of his action for damages against the BOAC opened in the Queen’s Bench division.

November 7, 1942
AB Joseph Arthur Robinson, RN, of 6, Dutson Terrace, Launceston, died in the ambulance on the way to hospital after coming into contact with a pedal-cycle ridden by a Land Girl at Dutson Terrace on Friday.
Rilla Mill is “the tops” on the jam front. The WI there have again won the title of champion jam-makers of Cornwall with a total of 4,700lbs made this year, for sale to wholsesalers to help the war effort.

Camelford carnival on Wednesday had an added attraction this year — a carnival queen. She was Miss Elsie Piper and her attendants were Misses F Hayne and C Saltern.

Sir George Croydon Marks was returned unopposed on Saturday as Member of Parliament for North Cornwall.
For 37 years town clerk, Mr Claude Hurst Peter, of Craigmore, was on Thursday presented with the honorary Freedom of the Borough of Launceston.
