The Bude-Stratton Council Chairman’s Appeal Fund to raise money to buy an electric wheelchair for Michelle Blaxland, reached fruition on Saturday with a grand gala concert at the Parkhouse Centre. Near the end of the sparkling show Chairman Phillip Sanderson took the stage to thank everyone for their fund raising efforts. He then presented Michelle with a framed, signed photo of her idols, the Spice Girls, with her mum and dad, flanked by Phillip Sanderson and his wife Wendy, surrounded by compere Ray Shaddick of Radio Cornwall, and some of the performers from the show.

October 9, 1982

Claire Louise Tomkinson, the 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alan Tomkinson, of Courtyard Farm Cottages, Lesnewth, near Boscastle, was last week the winner of a Top Shop fashion modelling competitions at the Fiesta Suite, Plymouth.

She collected a £150 first prize and a modelling contract with Top Shop.

Claire Louise, educated at Sir James Smith’s School, Camelford, is at present taking a hair-dressing and modelling course at the Mid-Cornwall College, St. Austell, and hopes to make this her career.

She is interested in travel, horse-riding and sailing.

Launceston businessman Mr John Hicks was yesterday (Thursday) sworn in at Bodmin Crown Court as Justice of the Peace for Cornwall, assigned to Dunheved Bench, Launceston.

A social was held in aid of the recently reforemed Warbstow Tug-o’-War Club which entered its first competition in August and won the novice cup at Milton Abbot. The MC for the social was Mr R Bolt snr.

Representing branches at Okehamption, Crediton, Ecbourne, Belstone, Hatherleigh and Highampton, 23 members of the Okehampton area Liberal Association hiked across Dartmoor on Saturday and will receive certificates from the association to record the feat.

Lack of enthusiasm, indicated by the small attendance at the meeting has led to the cancellation of the plans to revive Launceston Fat Stock Show this year.

After serving the Cornwall County Constabulary for about 29 years, Inspector W H Julieff, of Launceston is to retire at the end of the month.

It is now no longer necessary for retailers to hold a Ministry licence to sell meat, chocolate, chocolate confectionary and sugar confectionary. These are the last foods to be freed from retail licensing control.

Holsworthy’s new cinema was opened yesterday (Thursday) by Mr A W H Dickson, JP, of Dunsland House.

Figures for Devon show that 150 children partake in dinner each day at Holsworthy School at a cost of 3d per head. Although the children are allowed as much as they can eat, there is still a small profit being made. Some Devon schools provide a “one-course dinner” at 1d each.

Growing Bude, like an assertive adolescent, is crying out for greater privileges. It wants the boundaries of its ward extended, a larger preponderance over its near neighbour, Stratton, of representation on the urban council, and more voice in Poor Law Administration and rate assessment. Both sides of questions were put vehemently at the county council enquirey at Bude on Monday.
