What do Members of Parliament actually do? It's a question I am often asked.

Parliament has its rhythms, but every day is different. I could be debating legislation, showing school groups around the Commons or waiting until ten o'clock in the evening – sometimes later – to vote. The variety is stimulating and helps keep me on my toes.

From Monday to Thursday, I normally have to be available to vote in Parliament. It's always a relief then to leave the smoke behind, escape the Westminster jungle and return to the rolling hills of Herefordshire.

Fridays and Saturdays are for constituency business: for surgeries, for meetings with the council and voluntary organisations, for catching up with local issues and gossip.

Surgeries are especially important, and there are two kinds. Advice surgeries deal with specific matters and need to be booked through my office in advance. Drop-in surgeries are not booked, and are useful for last-minute issues, or just to get something off your mind.

Some issues pop up continually, poor mobile reception and slow broadband speeds among them. I have just had the honour of being elected by my fellow MPs as Chair of the Culture, Media and Sport select committee. This should allow me to press these and other key local issues with the Government.

Ross Gazette readers can check out http://www.jesse4hereford.com">www.jesse4hereford.com for surgery dates, or call my office on 01432 276 422 for more details. Whatever your concerns may be, please do not hesitate to get in touch if I can help.
