THE members, past and present, arrived promptly for the 7.30pm start at Yeolmbridge Community Methodist Chapel Hall in Ladycross for the ‘Werrington Ladies’ Circle 50th Anniversary Celebration’.

For this special occasion the hall had been decorated with floral bunting, Chinese lanterns, tables set with patterned tablecloths and floral arrangements adorned with decorative candles and fairy lights twinkling in bottles, making for an atmospheric evening.

The ladies were greeted with refreshments on arrival and made their way to a table in readiness for the president Susan Desmond’s welcome speech. Susan welcomed everyone to this momentous occasion and proceeded to give a brief insight into the history of how the group began back in 1971, naming its founder members and listing the many excursions, speakers and craft demonstrations which had taken place during the last five decades. A toast was made to the longevity of the Ladies Circle and the hope that the group would go from strength to strength in the future.

Information and photographs had been kindly gathered by Chris Adams and Di Symons and collated in a wall display for all to look at during the evening, with the addition of the Cornish & Devon Post lending a bound archive copy of their 1971 editions, which were available for all to peruse at their leisure (pictured right). These caused much conversation and evoked happy memories of times gone by.

Buffet style food, provided by Judith Scott of Something Nice Catering, was served in individual boxes tied with purple ribbon, followed by a soft fruits pavlova and cheese board. The hall was a throng with chatter as the members enjoyed the hospitality of this social event and the raffle was popular and well supported.

A celebration cake had been skilfully hand made by, Louise Finn, vice-president, decorated with handcrafted flowers, Werrington Ladies Circle insignia and the dates of 1971 to 2021 50th celebration. Mary Cole was asked to cut the cake having been founding president back in 1971. Mary then thanked past and present members for the friendship and for the sense of community this organisation had brought to everyone and hoped that it would continue for many years to come. Mary also thanked the current committee for all their hard work in organising such an enjoyable social evening.

Finally, as a lasting keepsake a little hessian bag of seeds, bee bombs, were given to each lady to take home to plant so that in subsequent years when the seeds grew they could remember the evening.

If anyone would like to join the Circle for any part of its programme they are very welcome to do so. Contact the president Susan on 01566 773768.
