THE Welsh Liberal Democrats have launched their manifesto for the general election in Talgarth.

Party activists and supporters, staff and councillors crowded into the cafe at the Mill in the town centre to listen to a short speech from Welsh party leader Kirsty Williams.

The Brecon and Radnorshire Assembly Member was joined by Roger Williams who is defending the seat the party has held since 1997.

Ms Williams attempted to position the party as potential power brokers and claimed no party will win a majority at the May 7 election.

She said: "We know there will not be a majority government. The question is when voters go to the polls is who do you want sitting at that table with David Cameron or Ed Miliband? A party that would pull Britain out of the European Union or a party that wants to tear the country apart

"We have shown over the last five years we can take the right decisions and hold those extremes to the centre ground."

The Mill which has a restored watermill which mills flour for the cafe's produce was refurbished in 2011 as part of a BBC rural regeneration TV series and has been credited with boosting the image of the town. Last used to grind animal feed the mill had been left unused for some 40 years.

Ms Williams said: "When politicians need to do launches they tend to go big name, glossy factories but opportunities come in different shapes and in this community the opportunity arose to breath new life into it when local people spotted the opportunity of the mill and worked really hard together to restore it. It has also been the catalyst for lots of other new businesses."

Ms Williams said the five years since the 2010 general election had 'flown by' but said where people previously criticised the party's proposals as 'great but not realistic' it was now able to stand as a party of government having formed the coalition with the Conservatives.

Mr Williams, who has held the Brecon and Radnorshire seat since 2001, and who is from Tredomen, near Talgarth, said: "Talgarth is one of the historic capitals of south Powys and this is an historic launch building on our work in government."
