Altarnun Model Makers exhibition to raise funds for the Cornwall Air Ambulance was held at the Village Hall between 10am and 4pm on Saturday, June 29 with charges being £2 per adult and accompanied under 16s free with a drink and biscuit included in the price. Extra refreshments were also available.

On stage 13: ‘Creepy Crawling Machine’, radio controlled and infra red models/vehicles, battery operated and clockwork models, ‘Spykee’ and similar were widely used by youngsters who made their own race courses. In addition to these items visitors were encouraged to try their hands on at least a further twenty models throughout the exhibition.

The raffles prizes were: first — Monopoly Cornwall Edition; second — Meccano radio controlled car kit; third — Red Arrow; fourth — aeroplane Meccano Kit; fifth — digger Meccano kit; sixth — tractor Meccano kit; and seventh — a cuddly white bear.

After hall hire and purchase of some refreshments (prizes and other refreshments having been donated) it is thought the net sum going to Cornwall Air Ambulance will be £162 plus any contributions that were put in the sealed collection box.

With 50 paying visitors and about 15 under 16s the whole day was far more successful than any of the organisers and exhibitors had anticipated. Many visitors went out of their way to express their delight and pleasure and even with requests for a similar show in the future. One surprise visitor who stopped in during a cycle ride was well known TV presenter, actor and artist, Timmy Mallett.

He proved to have a great curiosity in the exhibits and what they could do. A brilliant way of ending the exhibition.
