A COUPLE have raised their concerns that weeds growing at the side of a slip road and littering are ‘not a good impression’ for people visiting Launceston, writes Amy Dennis.

Alan and Judy Williams live on Tavistock Road. They say a patch of tarmacked land that their property backs on to was recently covered in earth by Cormac, and is now covered in weeds.

Mrs Williams said she had been in touch with her local Cornwall Councillor, Liberal Democrat Jade Farrington, who told her Cormac said it was a temporary measure, but Mrs Williams said she would like to know when it would be rectified.

There are currently building works being carried out in the area to develop a new housing estate.

Mrs Williams told the Post: “They said they would rectify it when they finished building — when’s that going to be?

“I don’t know why they have put down a temporary mess and intend on coming back to clear it up. Why are they allowed to leave it like it?

“What a fine entry to Launceston for visitors. It’s not a good impression is it?”

Mrs Williams also raised concerns about littering in that area, and said she recently went out and collected three bin bags full of rubbish, and since then it has been ‘accumulating’.

She added: “As a town we don’t need this kind of thing going on.”

A spokesperson for Cornwall Council said: “Once construction works are complete, CORMAC will restore the grass verges at Hay Common roundabout (A388 Tavistock Road). Due to the busy location of the roundabout, we recommend that anyone who is concerned about litter contacts Biffa or the council’s environmental protection team so arrangements can be made to remove it.”

Mr and Mrs Williams have also raised their concerns about a ‘groove’ in the highway outside of their property, which they say was caused by a heavy goods vehicle. She said: “We constantly get this thud, thud of traffic going over it. The hole is getting deeper. It’s not going to be too long before a motorcyclist comes to grief.”

Mrs Williams reported that work was being carried out as the Post went to press.

Potholes can be reported to Cornwall Council by going to www.cornwall.gov.uk and searching for ‘report a pothole’.
