AS the summer agricultural showing season draws to a close, the 2016 Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association (RCAA) summer cattle and sheep points champions have been crowned, including a farm from Launceston.
The championships, sponsored and run by the RCAA, are decided by the number of points competitors have gained from the cattle and sheep sections at five of Cornwall’s one-day agricultural shows.
A top three placing within the relevant classes at Liskeard, Stithians, Camborne, Launceston and Camelford shows provide competitors with points and the highest number accumulated securing the top prize.
The sheep section saw a repeat of the final result from the 2015 running of the competition. This year’s clear winner was, again, Gwen Renfree from Dannett Farm, Quethiock, who amassed a total of 105 points. Nick Burrington from North Covett Farm, Oxton, Devon, took the runner-up spot with 63 points.
It was much closer in the cattle section with James and Shelley Warren from Tredinney Farm, St Buryan, crowned the 2016 champions. Their 45 point total was just six ahead of Arthur and Debbie Walters from West Berriow Farm, Launceston, who were in second place.
RCAA secretary, Christopher Riddle, said: “It’s been yet another great summer of agricultural showing in Cornwall with good livestock entries, healthy attendances and the opportunity to once again showcase the best the industry has to offer.
“Plans are already underway ahead of next year’s Royal Cornwall Show, and we’re looking forward to another strong year of agricultural showing across the county.”
The winter showing season is rapidly approaching, and cattle and sheep competitors’ focus will shift to the RCAA’s winer points championships, with results counting from the results at Liskeard (Thursday, October 27), the Cornish Winter Fair in Wadebridge (Saturday, November 19), Helston (Monday, November 28) and Truro’s (Wednesday, December 7) prime stock shows.
