TO MAKE a difference in the local community the Holsworthy Neighbourhood Police Team are looking for volunteers to join their Community Speed Watch.
The team is looking for volunteers from Holsworthy, and the town’s outlying villages. The speed watch involves members of the local community coming together with an aim of engaging and educating drivers rather than issuing fines and court summonses.
Teams of volunteers will then stand at the side of the road with calibrated recording equipment to monitor traffic speeds.
Those vehicles caught speeding will then be recorded and a warning letter will be sent to the vehicle owner, together with educational information.
Those who are caught persistently breaking the speeding limits will be sent further warning letters and may possibly receive a visit from the Neighbourhood Policing Team — they will then deliver some words of advice to try and prevent further action being taken.
For those offenders who chose to ignore these warnings no further letters will be sent, however, they will instead be given a fixed penalty ticket — or summonsed to court, should the circumstances allow it.
All community speed watch sessions are carried out in accordance with strict guidelines at pre risk assessed sites.
There are a number of pre-approved sites in Holsworthy and the surrounding area for speed watch sessions to be held.
Three watch sites are in Holsworthy town and are currently being operated by a small, yet growing, team of local people. With the help of volunteers the policing team will be able to operate these sites more frequently and increase the impact the scheme has.
If speeding drivers are an issue in the local area, why not get involved and do something to help reduce it.
