A CORNWALL councillor organised a litter pick at Ridgegrove Estate in Launceston, at which nine full bin bags of litter were picked up by volunteers.

Liberal Democrat ward member for Launceston Central, Gemma Massey, recently visited Launceston Day Centre, when some of the service users requested the litter pick.

This latest litter pick on April 4 in a string of voluntary action events was again well attended.

Cllr Massey was joined by several day centre users, Shelley Vanstone of Tesco and a handful of local residents.

The volunteers battled with some heavy storms, but kept working hard for the community collecting in total nine full bin bags of litter in an hour and a half.

Other target areas which Cllr Massey also logged and requested further assistance for included a large amount of broken glass on a pathway and a section of broken bin bags on Ridgegrove Lane.

Speaking after the event Cllr Massey said: “It was a pleasure to again be asked by a local group to facilitate a litter pick, I find the idea of a litter pick, one of mixed feelings. Do I wish some residents would take pride in where they live and not treat our beautiful town with such disrespect? Absolutely. Do I wish our Government would treat Cornwall fairly and increase the awful disproportionate funding we face to aid better local resources? Definitely!

“But am I in admiration of those selfless residents who give their time for the community, of whom instead of sitting back complaining, they get on and make a difference. Thank you again to everyone who gave their time today for the local area.”

The next action day planned is Launceston Matters’ community action day, beginning at the railings outside of the Cornish and Devon Post on May 11.
