VOLUNTEERS are progressing plans for funding towards re-opening a youth centre in Holsworthy.

The Holsworthy Area group, led by Conservative county councillor for Holsworthy Rural Barry Parsons, is leading a campaign to reopen a youth centre in the town after Devon County Council closed the building at Sanders Lane in October.

The centre provided a range of social activities for around 260 young people [in 2013] aged 10 to 19, who travelled from Holsworthy and surrounding parishes.

Now, plans are well underway to reopen a centre, with hopes it will become a hub that can also be used by other organisations in the town, including the primary school.

Town councillor Lyndon Piper is driving the youth centre project, along with former youth worker, Nigel Lewis-Carpenter.

Youths involved with the former centre are supporting the project and keen to see it re-established, meanwhile Holsworthy Community Property Trust has agreed to lease the land and Holsworthy CATS (Community Action Through Sport) is helping with the recruitment drive.
