BLOOD donors in Bude and Launceston are being urged by NHS Blood and Transplant to make and keep appointments to ensure hospitals retain a healthy blood supply this winter.

The demand for blood and platelets is constant, and some people will require blood transfusions over the festive period.

The forecasted bad weather and busy holiday schedules are set to decrease the number of expected donations.

Winter bugs such as the common cold are also set to rule many people out of being able to donate but the hospital will still rely on the need for around 6,000 units of blood per day for patients.

Senior marketing coordinator at NHS Blood and Transport Karen Healy said: “Please make a date to donate now. Each blood donation you make can save or improve the lives of up to three people and platelet donors can help three adults or 12 children each time they donate.”

Red blood cells only have a shelf life of 35 days, and platelets only one week. As a hospital’s blood supply needs to be completely replenished every month and platelets every week, NHS Blood and Transplant wants people to continue donating over the holiday period.

Donor sessions will be held at the town hall in Launceston on December 2 at 1.10pm, 3.15pm, 4.15pm and 7.15pm.

The Bude sessions will be held in the Park House Centre on December 17 at 12.50pm, 3.15pm, 4.15pm and 6.45pm.
