The withdrawal two weeks ago of the 636 Wednesday Market Day bus service from Bradworthy to Holsworthy via Sutcombe and Chilsworthy may signal the demise of other rural services, writes Christine Williams, our Holsworthy correspondent. This is the opinion of David Guscott whose company has been operating this route and the 638 from Halwill since 1964. "I'm worried we're going to lose a lot of routes," he said. "With the small numbers using the service, the big rise in the cost of fuel, the 69p single fare for pensioners, plus the £3 to park in Holsworthy it simply isn't worth it. "On top of that, Devon County Council regulates fares and lays down rules as to the condition and age of the coach, which must be less than 12 years old and there has to be a similar back-up coach as well. All people really want is a decent safe bus and somewhere to put their shopping."
