AS PART of the National Heritage’s open days, Altarnun Church tower is to be opened for visitors to see a demonstration of ringing, and then climb the 97 steps of the stone spiral staircase to the bell chamber to see the eight bells and hear the bell in action.
This free event on Saturday, September 10, between 2pm and 5pm, welcomes all visitors from the age of ten and upwards.
It is important to note that the climb up the tower’s 97 narrow steps in the spiral staircase is physically demanding, so visitors must be fit to cope with this activity.
Small groups will be escorted up and back down the tower, and each visit will last for approximately 20 minutes.
It is advised to assemble in the church a few minutes before allocated times, where visitors will be met by one of the bell ringers and given a leaflet to explain more about what will take place on the visit.
Altarnun Church, often referred to as the Cathedral on the Moor, is a Grade I listed building. The tower is 109ft high and during the visit, visitors will get the opportunity to look around the church, seeing features such as the Norman font, 78 bench end carvings from the 16th century, and more.
A churchwarden will be on site to answer any questions and show visitors around if requires. Light refreshments will be available for a small charge.
The church is located in the centre of the village of Altarnun, and free parking is available outside with toilets available in the church hall nearby.
There are limited places available, so booking is advised. To make a booking, contact Marion Tipton on 01566 86342.
