The torrential rain that greeted Stoke Climsland Parish Church Summer Fete, was not going to dampen spirits and a wonderful day was still had by the many who came to enjoy all there was to offer.

Stalls were moved inside the marquee and the church, and people were still able to enjoy the many things on offer.

The star of the day was Betty Stone aged seven, who won the chance to be VIP for the day. Arriving at the occasion in an Aston Martin, Betty declared the fete open, proudly wearing her VIP rosette, presented to her by Neil Warnock.

Betty had won a village competition to find an idea that would enhance the lives of children in the village. The competition was launched by the church to support the 'Year of the Child 2009' marking the 30th anniversary of the UNICEF International Year of the Child.

Betty's winning entry centred around having a children's library at the Old School in the village, with a cafe for the adults and books and toys available for children to borrow. The idea was well thought out, with suggestions for the type of stories that could be available and suggestions that at certain times there could be a storyteller, or perhaps the children could read to each other.

Other ideas included a 'social club' for children or a 'youth club', and added attractions to the village green. However, elements of all the ideas could be incorporated into Betty's winning idea...like cooking classes, drama, sports and a 'kid's bar' with interesting milk shakes, smoothies etc.

The Old School, situated at the centre of the village, is indeed an ideal place to site such a a great idea and both the church and the trustees of the Old School are looking forward to working with Betty to see how her idea might work in practice.
