A GEORGE Cross awarded to glamorous World War II secret agent Violette Szabo has sold for £260,000 at auction.

The medals sold within a minute to Lord Ashcroft's collection and will be on public display at London's Imperial War Museum.

The sale is a vindication for Violette's 73-year-old daughter Tania who lives in Llangammarch Wells, near Builth Wells.

She was orphaned in 1945 when her mother was captured and shot by the Nazis and said she hoped the medals would be bought by a museum and their sale would again place her mother's name in the limelight.
