Led by town councillor, Lauren Rathbone, who pushed the idea forward at a recent full council meeting, the litter pick was ‘really successful’ with 24 people attending, including deputy mayor Cllr Claire Hewlett, nine adults and 15 children.
Cllr Rathbone, who is also a member of Plastic Free Camelford, said: “We covered as much of Camelford as we could, mainly Chapel Street, Clease car park and road, Highfield, Pras an Ferla and Clease Meadows.”
The team litter picked for around an hour and a half, with Cllr Hewlett coming across a vintage find — a crisp packet with a best before date of 1992!
In total, the group collected nine bin bags of rubbish, lots of cans and drinks bottles, beer glasses, food wrappers and even a car part.
The litter picks will be running monthly on the second Sunday of each month for the foreseeable future.
Cllr Rathbone added: “I have to say, it’s such a therapeutic thing to do, even though I wish we didn’t have to do it. But it was a lovely sunny day and the children were so excited to be taking part. It almost became a competition with some of them, to see who could get the fullest bin bag!”
