A PREVIOUSLY redundant telephone box in Pencarrow, near Camelford, has been converted into a new community library facility, named the Phone Box Library.
The project began when Ann Humphreys and Grahame Hounslow were holidaying in Devon, and spotted an old telephone box that had been converted into a library.
Ann returned home inspired and determined to do something with the disused one in Pencarrow.
Ann set about tracing the owner, and found that it had been adopted some years ago by the Community Heartbeat Trust.
After contacting them, she got permission for her project and then began fundraising with a group of organisers to get enough money to renovate the old box.
The group took over £150 at a coffee morning, thanks to the support of neighbours, friends and others around Advent and Camelford.
The community pulled together and several people helped in the manual work needed for the restoration. People started to donate books, plus other small items, and Ann held a stall at the pre-loved clothes sale, which she and her daughter run once a month.
With the renovation complete, the group stocked the box with the best of the books and had an official opening last Thursday, which was a huge success.
People can now come and purchase books in this mini library, at 50p each. The funds raised will go towards installing a defibrillator, which will be housed inside the box too.
Ann said: “With thanks to everyone who helped or supported us. Come and see it for yourselves!”
