A DERBYSHIRE man who contacted Whitstone Parish Council last year about its new war memorial said the Post was 'instrumental' in bringing him and his previously unknown relative together. The Post reported (February 6) that Brian Phillips spotted an online article about the war memorial in Whitstone's village magazine while looking for information about his family history. The parish clerk Esther Greig was, at the time, appealing for information to help compile a list of names for the memorial and Mr Phillips informed Ms Greig about his grandfather, William James Phillips, who was born and bred in Whitstone and fought and died in France during World War One. Lesley Ellis from Clawton contacted the Post after reading the article to say that his mother, Maria Jane Phillips, is a sister to William and the two were put in touch.
