A GAME that would see the winners crowned 'best team in Cornwall' was always going to be highly contested and with Redruth as the opposition, the stakes were even higher.
From the whistle though the All Blacks took the game to Redruth but two penalties, one of them a harsh decision in many people's eyes, enabled Redruth to run in two quick easy tries, one of which was converted. The score in the first quarter Launceston 0, Redruth 12.
To recover 12 points was not going to be easy, but Launceston rose to the challenge and continuous pressure saw Redruth concede three penalties, all despatched with clinical precision by the boot of Ben Hawke. Launceston 9, Redruth 12.
The first half ended with Adam Collings brilliantly intercepting a pass on the Redruth try-line and going over, the try being converted by Ben Hawke. Launceston 16, Redruth 12.
The second half started with Redruth defending deep in their territory but an unfortunate knock-on from long distance kick saw Launceston concede a scrum. The hefty Redruth pack drove over for a try that was not converted. Launceston 16, Redruth 17.
This stung Launceston into a fierce fight-back. A blinding run by Lewis Patterson breached the Reds' defence and was finished by an equally dazzling run from Ben Hawke who made the try line and subsequently converted it. Final score Launceston 23 Redruth 17.
