BY the end of this year it is hoped that two more sections of the Ruby Way off-road multi-use trail from Holsworthy to Hatherleigh will be opened,.
An injection of £500,000 from Devon County Council's sale of Exeter Airport is enabling DCC's project manager, Graham Cornish to build the two new sections. The whole section between Hatherleigh and Black Torrington should be completed by this autumn and it is hoped that the section from Hollacombe to Holsworthy will also be opened this year.
Coles Mill Viaduct will take longer — two to three years, but a temporary route around it will be opened. No progress having been made with negotiations, it is planned to compulsorily purchase the structure.
Once these sections are complete there will only be four kms left to assemble between Holsworthy and Hatherleigh. Then the benefits will start to flow.
Anyone who would like to help can join the Ruby Way Action Group and act as the local eyes and ears of the team. Information such as planning applications, land for sale or changes of ownership along the route are vital to help get the route open for all.
