THE family and friends of a popular young musician they have been supporting in his battle with Crohn's Disease have got together to help raise awareness of this illness, and at the same time raise funds for Crohn's and Colitis UK.

Mike Clarke, 25, from St Cleer, was first diagnosed with severe Crohn's Disease in 2009 and despite various treatments became progressively more ill.

A St Austell College music student, Mike also played bass in a local band. Unfortunately he became too unwell to continue with the band, and also had to give up BMX riding.

Over the past three years Mike has endured many spells in hospital and in 2013 underwent a ileostomy which relieved some of the painful symptoms. However, the disease came back again and in March this year he underwent urgent surgery which saw the removal of his entire colon.

A 20-mile walk from Liskeard to Jamaica Inn and back, has been organised by family friend Zoe Oliver to take place on Sunday, May 24. Among the 20 walkers will be Mike's mum Angie Clarke and his brother Dave.

Another family friend and keen cyclist Jennie Morgan, who lives in Plymouth, is organising a 100-mile bike ride coast to coast between Ilfracombe and Plymouth, with more than a dozen people taking part on July 4.

Mike, who is now at home recuperating, is hoping to be well enough to take part in the final few miles of the bike ride and to get back on track and start playing bass again.

Angie said: 'I am overwhelmed by the support for Mike and can't thank enough everyone who is giving up their time to be involved in both these events. It means so much to us. Since Mike became ill I have realised that this awful disease has a big effect on many people's lives, more than we realise.'

Crohn's Disease is a chronic long-term condition which causes inflammation and ulcers in the lining of the digestive system. There are currently 115,000 sufferers in the UK.
