ST Teath Modern Sequence Dance Club organised a special ‘Big Night’ to mark the 20 years since Alan and Lon Evans became club leaders on June 27.

Since 1996, under Alan and Lon’s leadership, club members have enjoyed most Monday evenings of the year in St Teath Church Hall with an interesting choice of dances, from very old favourites to the most recent, which Alan and Lon choose from a sequence dance repertoire of more than 3,000 dances.

They learn new dances from scripts to teach at least once a month, pleasing experienced dancers and helping new dancers to progress.

Regular club evenings are well planned with a great range of music and they have cultivated links with organists of national reputation who came to play for the club.

They have created a friendly and welcoming club, a happy place for both members and visitors.

Dancers enjoyed a seated pasty and fizz supper with superb sweets provided by club members and an evening of favourite dances, including some from Alan and Lon’s original 1996 programme.

Famed concert organist David Last made the 700-mile round trip from Ipswich to play an exciting range of music to accompany their choice of dances for the evening. Club members warmly applauded them as they led off each dance.

Club chairman, Dick Gregory, thanked them warmly on behalf of all the members for their 20 years’ service as club leaders and hoped that they would continue their dedicated and enthusiastic leadership for at least 20 years at the club, which they have nurtured, and is so important to its members.

Ray and Ann Scawn, who were dancers at the club when Alan and Lon began to lead, presented them with a commemorative engraved plaque and a bouquet of flowers.

Clearly moved by the affection shown by club members and guests, Alan and Lon quickly announced the next dance, led off, and a great evening of music and dancing was enjoyed by everyone.
