A NEW interactive map has been launched by TV Licensing, who have teamed up with Launceston’s Money Advice Centre, to help tackle embarrassment surrounding debt advice.

Embarrassment is a key factor preventing people in financial difficulty asking for help, research has revealed. To help combat the problem, TV Licensing has launched an interactive online map to make it easier for people to find organisations that offer financial advice — and Launceston Money Advice Centre has helped identify the organisations in the Launceston area.

The map provides locations and details of more than 480 partners, which can provide support on TV Licensing issues.

One person, who wished to remain anonymous, who has accessed the services of Launceston’s Money Advice Centre branch and would encourage others to take advantage of their services said: “I had just been involved in an accident at work and with my partner working part time and providing the primary care to the children, she then had to become the full time carer to me as well and we were about to lose not just her income but mine too.

“We were unfamiliar with how to access help and support and terrified we would lose our home. When everything came crashing down, with no job and income, things couldn’t have been darker or more hopeless. The support provided by the Launceston Money Advice Centre was amazing.

“Firstly, they helped us face the reality of our situation, and went through all the figures with us. Then, we were advised that there was a way through all this, that there was hope and a way back to a debt free future. Now, a few months later, our lives have totally turned around, thanks to the encouragement, practical support and advice. We can breathe again.

“We still are working through the process to be totally debt free, but learning good money management has literally changed our lives. If you are struggling with debt like us, they can help you too.”

Sarah Vinson, adviser at Launceston Money Advice Centre, said: “Many callers in Launceston are afraid or embarrassed to discuss debts with their family or close friends — we can often be the first person they’ve confided in.

“Launceston Money Advice Centre is part of a national network run by the charity Community Money Advice. We are here to help and encourage anyone struggling with debts to seek free, face-to-face advice. We will not judge you and our advice is independent and impartial. It is possible to find freedom from debt.”

TV Licensing works with more than 400 charities and money advice organisations to give the best advice and information to people who approach them for assistance on staying licenced. A licence costs £150.50 for the year, but there are payment plans which make it possible to pay in smaller, more manageable chunks.
