A PAINTING depicting ‘Launceston, Cornwall’ by the infamous Joseph Mallord William Turner is set to go under the hammer in Christie’s upcoming sale in New York on January 28.
The auction of ‘Old Master and British Drawings Including Works from the Collection of Jean Bonna’ will offer a wide variety of works on paper covering over five hundred years from approximately 1480 to the mid-19th century.
The sale will conclude with four exceptional watercolors by JMW Turner, R.A. (London 1775-1851), covering the entire arch of the great British artist’s career.
Among the lots is Launceston, Cornwall a pencil and watercolor piece, heightened with bodycolor and gum arabic, with scratching out.
The image is 11 inches by 15 inches and looks towards one of the town’s most well known landmarks, Launceston Castle, with St Mary Magdalene’s Church visible to its left. Lot 127 will be put to auction with an estimate of USD 400,000 to USD 600,000.
Comprised of 129 lots, with many fresh to the market works from distinguished collections, the auction presents an opportunity to acquire some of the most celebrated and dramatic images of western art.
