HAVING found a new team manager since last year, when the future of the group was in doubt, Holsworthy Moorland Training Group once again participated in the annual Ten Tors challenge over the weekend with three teams.

Having trained hard since December, the teams were well prepared and with a dry and windy weekend forecast, they all set off in good spirits at 7am on the Saturday morning.

The all boys 35-mile team of Reece Bere (team leader), Pip Horn, Josh Smith, Luke Browning, Mitchell and Max Snook-Bevis walked well through the first day, but unfortunately missed their planned camp location.

However, after an early start on the Sunday morning, they caught up their time and made it back to camp at 1.53pm to a great welcome from parents and supporters.

The all girls 35 team of Mirran Weir (team leader), Issy Edworthy, Naomi Cole, Louise Shepard, Rebecca Bromell and Mia Polhill had a great first day hitting all their planned times and camping early at Standon Farm.

On the Sunday, they again kept up the effort and finished just three minutes later than their plan and only a few minutes behind the other team at 2pm.

The 55-mile team, containing three brothers, TJ, Mitch and Reece Acres, plus Emily Shepard, Lilli Day and Cameron Hillman, were going for the biggest challenge and a distance that meant sore legs, feet and backs were guaranteed.

The team rose to the task and put in a fantastic effort, returning to camp as a complete team and still smiling at 3.08pm.

With three complete teams back to the camp safe — if a little sore — team manager, Geoff Day, was delighted with the result and said: “All the teams had done brilliantly and been a complete pleasure to work with through the training period.”

He also thanked all the existing HMTG leaders, who had helped prepare the teams so well and was looking forward to another successful year in 2018.
