A team of three from South East Cornwall are taking part in the Monte Carlo Banger Rally.
Ray Meadows, Denise Larner and Sally Hawken this week set out from Liskeard in a 1993 Skoda donated by friend Rachel Brooks.
The challenge will see them journey through France, Switzerland and Italy with the aim of reaching Monte Carlo on Sunday.
With wacky challenges along the way, the team will be raising money for Get Together Cornwall, a Dobwalls-based charity supporting children with autism. Around £1,000 has already been pledged, says Denise and many of the town's businesses have sponsored the car.
'Ray and I had always fancied doing a rally and we saw a letter about it in the Cornish Times,' she said. 'We decided to go for it and at the same time support Get Together Cornwall, as well as promoting Liskeard a little bit too.'
A team name 'Curiously Cornish' has allowed the trio plenty of scope in inventing costumes for the trip and they hope their Cornish-themed attire as well as tourism leaflets will help to put the town on the map. Among the well-wishers gathered on the Parade to see the team off was Claire Finnegan-Vyse, of Get Together Cornwall, who said the challenge had raised the charity's profile
