TRIBUTES have been paid to Barrie Boundy, a well-known figure in the Launceston area and beyond, who passed away recently.

Barrie was the vice chairman of the St Stephens Residents’ Association, and the chairman, Andrew Wood said: “Barrie initiated the start of the residents’ association. He sowed the seed after nearly getting run over and knew he had to act, not through what happened to him, but for the safety of the children and elderly in the village.

“He tirelessly did things for others. Words cannot describe his kindness and how he carried out the wonderful things he did in his very unassuming manner. I am sure we all have very fond memories of Barrie, may we never forget them.”

Andrew said as an association they are poorer, but they will continue to honour the memory of Barrie.

Barrie was also known to many through his association with Truscotts Garage, and Launceston Rugby Club.

He played rugby for Liskeard-Looe in his younger days, and became involved with Launceston when he and his brother John were the owners of the garage.

Dave Baker from the club said initially Barrie didn’t come to matches very often due to Saturday being the busiest day for the garage, but once he retired he had more time and supported the club more and more, at home and away, eventually becoming club president.

He also used to help Dave once a week with the bar and kitchen and help prepare for the next game.

“He was a splendid man, always happy to help and do anything for the club,” Dave added.

A minute of clapping was held on Saturday before the Cornish All Blacks’ play-off game in his memory.

Mayor of Launceston, Cllr Margaret Young, announced Barrie’s passing at the last meeting of the town council, and a minute’s silence was observed.

Barrie’s memorial service will be held at St Stephens Church at 2.30pm on Tuesday, May 7, after a private family cremation at Bodmin.
