TRIBUTES have been paid to Launceston man, Phil Lewitt who died following a collision in the town last Friday, with many describing him as a 'true inspiration to young people whose vision will live on,' writes Suzanne Cleave.

A large part of Launceston town centre was closed off for a number of hours on Friday, following the single vehicle road traffic collision in Westgate Street.

It appeared that the Nissan Qashqai that Phil was driving struck Blades hairdressers before continuing up Westgate Street and colliding with the steps of the Westgate Centre.

Fire brigade, police and ambulance crews attended, but police confirmed that Phil, 62, had died.

Since then, a steady stream of flowers have been laid on the steps of the Westgate Centre in memory of a man who was very well known in the town and beyond.

His family have expressed their thanks for all the kind words and support they have been given, and daughter, Beth said they have helped immensely.
