CORNWALL Council is developing a ‘transport strategy’ for Launceston to try and improve traffic flows and air quality in the Newport area.
Last week the Post reported a traffic census was being carried out on St Thomas Road on Tuesday from 7am to 7pm, with questionnaires handed out to motorists heading towards Newport (Holsworthy/Bude direction).
Those handing out the information on site said it is ‘traffic modelling so civil engineers get a feel of the type of traffic coming through the town’.
The council says information provided to the Launceston Transport Study ‘will be used to plan future transport provision in the area’.
Questionnaires handed out included a freepost envelope and completed questionnaires will be entered in to a cash prize draw.
A spokesperson for Cornwall Council said: “The council is carrying out traffic surveys as part of the transport strategy being developed to improve traffic flows, air quality and pedestrian connectivity in and around the Newport Square area of Launceston.
“We already know that 65% of trips on Launceston’s roads are by local people or for doing business in the town. The information from the traffic surveys will help us to fully understand where journeys by private cars and HGVs begin, their destinations, and the purposes for the journeys.”
