CORNWALL?Councillor for the St Teath and St Breward Ward, Dominic Fairman (Lib Dem), has set the traffic issues in Delabole high on his priority list.
Below, he explains the work he has been doing.
Since coming into office on July 1, I have consistently tried to raise the Delabole traffic issues at Cornwall Council.
I have hosted several site visits over the last couple of months in the village with the parish council, fire crew, and local police meeting with the transport portfolio holder, and senior officers from our council and Cormac.
The last improvement scheme for the village was put forward in 2012 and in my opinion was not broad enough in ambition and then was only partially implemented.
After six months of talking to local people I now feel that I have a good understanding of the problems and am also confident that my persistent lobbying is slowly beginning to pay off at New County Hall.
I have, I believe, got to the point where we will commission a report into the various options and costs for change and I would like to share here what I believe are the priorities.
With the support of some local businesses, enough funds have been raised to enable the school to secure our lollipop lady for at least two more years — however, as we all know her job currently is helping parents safely drop their children at school as walking to school is not considered a safe option for many families due to the traffic issues.
Therefore my main priority for change is to make Delabole a village safe for pedestrians again, with a secondary priority of relieving some of the chronic congestion problems in the High Street.
Specifically I would like to explore the following: A 20mph zone around the school; An extension to the no parking zone at the entrance to Atlantic Way to allow free access for lorries; work to increase the safety of the junction with Pengelly; consideration to the location and visibility of the pedestrian crossing; unlocking the congestion in the narrows so that vehicles no longer have to mount the pavement coupled with provision of extra off street parking within the large verges towards Medrose; a keep clear section to protect the turning into Water Lane.
Ultimately I would like families to be able to safely walk to school, which would be of benefit to the whole village.
