PLOUGH Sunday was celebrated with a service at Pancrasweek.

The service has been a traditional part of the church calendar since it was re-instituted in the Victorian times but was an old ritual that had ‘fallen by the wayside’.

The service was conducted by the Rev Christopher Penn, assisted by Mrs Mary Aicheler and there was a very good attendance with church members from across the benefice attending, including those from Pancrasweek, Pyworthy and Bridgerule Parish churches. Refreshments were provided after the service by the Pancrasweek ladies.

The tractor and plough used for the blessing belong to Roger and Martin Vanstone.

It is thought that Plough Sunday marked the end of the Christmas break and that farmers re-commenced ploughing the day after.
