THIS year’s Victorian Market will have a different name councillors were told during the Tuesday, February 18 meeting of Launceston Town Council.
Cllr Helen Bailey provided councillors with a report regarding the recent decision taken to dedicate this year’s event to the Pilgrim fathers who set sail from Plymouth in 1620.
She said: “The town council have agreed to run the Victorian Market which is organised by Rotary in June in support of the Pilgrim fathers that launched from Plymouth 400 years ago.
“We are going to change the event’s name to ‘The Pilgrim’s Fayre’.”
Cllr Bailey said Lawrence House Museum was keen to get involved and the market was looking for others to join in. She added: “It will be charity only on the day, so anyone — be that a charity or a non-profit organisation — that wants a stall are welcome to contact me.”
Following the meeting Cllr Bailey provided the Post with a bit more information. She said: “We have decided to change to name this year to celebrate it being 400 years since the Mayflower sailed suggested last year by Arthur Will our town historian.
“The town council are organising the event Cllrs [Nicola] Gilbert, [Margaret] Young and myself are the committee. Launceston Rotary Club have handed this over to us again this year and they have provided the funding to the council to do this in support of the event and it continuing.
“We are hoping this year to have the Chamber of Commerce on board again and our town businesses get involved by dressing up and taking part in the window dressing competition.
“It is only for local volunteer groups, charities and schools to hold stalls to raise awareness and funds. If anyone wishes to book a stall or know more they can email me.”
