A ‘MEET the Mayor and Police’ drop-in event was held in Camelford Library on Tuesday, August 20.

Around 15 people turned up to the event, which was held between 10am and 12pm and led by mayor of Camelford Cllr Claire Hewlett, Sgt Dan Harvey and neighbourhood beat officer PC Mike Ives.

The event has proved successful and a good insight for both the mayor and police team into their community’s concerns and thoughts on services in the area.

Cllr Hewlett said: “I thought it was really good! We had around 15 people turn up in the two hours we were there. We were never not talking to people, so there was a steady flow of people.”

The main topics covered surrounded antisocial behaviour, drinking and substance abuse, and they even spoke to a parent whose child was interested in joining the police force.

Following the success of the event, Cllr Hewlett is hopeful that she will be able to persuade the police to hold another for those who were unable to attend in the daytime due to work commitments. She said: “I am trying to persuade them to repeat this event in the evening, so it gives people who are working in the day a chance to be involved and speak to us too.

“It was very informal, but we were able to hear any concerns people might have without having to go through the official complaints system. It was also nice for Sgt Dan and Mike to get to know their community. Of course, car parks and parking came up quite a few times and how it is enforced, but it was mainly more to do with actual policing.”
