PROPOSALS suggesting the pedestrianisation of a number of areas throughout Launceston were heard by the town council at their meeting held on Tuesday, September 20.

Forwarded by the town strategy group, which comprises members representing the Forum, the Chamber of Commerce, road safety committee, any/all of the town's three Cornwall Councillors and town council, the proposals mark a change of approach in areas of the town which are considered to be inconvenient and even dangerous.

The group's proposal said: 'As traffic flow increases, we believe there is a commensurate increase in the desire of the general public for streets to revert to the quiet thoroughfares of earlier years in which the safety and comfort of pedestrians are placed above the consideration of vehicle users.'

Accordingly, they drew up detailed plans for the pedestrianisation of a number of streets.
