NOW that Easter is over and all the eggs have been found, residents of Holsworthy can be on the look out for painted rocks instead.

Following in the footsteps of the Bude Rocks group, Sophie Dart, formerly of Bude who now works at Marhamchurch Primary School and lives in Holsworthy, said she was intrigued by the idea of hiding rocks around her town for others to find. She said: “I am originally from Bude and I often visit my parents who still live there. Basically, I’d seen a lot around the town about the Bude Rocks group and thought it would be good for the people of Holsworthy to get involved.”

The premise behind the group is that people paint and decorate stones, usually found on the beach, and hide them around the town for others to find. When a rock is found the group asks that a picture is taken and posted to its Facebook site before the rock is re-hidden nearby.

Sophie said: “I basically painted a few rocks, set up a Facebook page and hid the rocks. I am now hoping it will grow over time as more people join!”

She said a few rocks have already been found by Holsworthy residents and have since been re-hidden: “A few people started to say they were interested in decorating their own rocks over Easter with their kids — so there might be some nice Easter themed ones around somewhere!”

Sophie said it is a project she is keen to get her own pupils involved with in the future: “I just think it is something a bit different for the town and I am hoping I can get the kids at Marhamchurch Primary School involved too.”

If anyone in Holsworthy has spotted one of these rocks they are asked to take a photograph, upload it to the Facebook group ‘Holsworthy Rocks’ and then hide the rock again somewhere nearby. Alternatively people can design their own rocks and hide them anywhere in the town. Sophie added: “I have ‘made’ 12 rocks so far and have hidden over half. But anyone can join in and create their own — that is the beauty of it, it is open to everyone and I hope it will grow and grow.”
