LAUNCESTON'S annual carnival was blessed with lovely weather, and literally went of with a bang last Saturday evening, with a maroon heralding the start of the 2013 parade from Newport Industrial Estate at 7pm.

The day's events started at 2.30pm in the Town Hall, with the children's fancy dress parade. Numerous children of mixed ages took part.

Launceston's carnival royalty took centre stage at 3.30pm and were officially crowned and presented with their trophies, sashes and tiaras by the Mayor and Mayoress of Launceston, Dave and Carole Gordon.

The mayor commented how lovely the girls looked, congratulated them and wished them an enjoyable year of office, as they represent the town.

From 5pm, Newport Industrial Estate came alive with numerous floats, classic and vintage vehicles and walking entries, and it became obvious very quickly that Launceston was in for a great carnival.

Despite the loss of some key float entries this year, there was a wide variety of brightly lit, and highly decorated vehicles, with many walking entries, and marching bands to thrill the crowd lining the narrow streets.
