PLANS to transform one of Launceston's oldest Georgian townhouses from a hotel to a dwelling have been turned down by Cornwall Council. Owners of the Eagle House Hotel proposed to change the use from hotel to residential dwelling — 'reverting the building back to its original and intended use as a house.' But Cornwall Council's planning officer on Monday refused the application, saying the loss of the hotel would have an 'adverse impact' on the town centre. The officer concluded: 'The information submitted with this application fails to provide convincing evidence to justify the loss of the existing hotel use. "The site is located on the fringe of the town centre and is developed with an important heritage asset. 'Without evidence to the contrary, it is considered the loss of the hotel will have an adverse impact on the vitality and viability of the town centre and an adverse impact on the tourism offer within the town, whilst resulting in the loss of a community facility.'
