HOLSWORTHY will host a ‘Devon history day’ this June, the first time the town has held such an event, writes Christine Williams.

Members of Devon History Society (DHS) will be coming to Holsworthy’s Memorial Hall from all corners of the county on Saturday, June 18 for an event hosted by the town’s history society.

Members of the local committee recently met DHS’s Paul Auchterlonie to finalise the programme for the day.

Starting at 10am the morning session will include three talks on the history, traditions and life of the town.

Portreeve John Addicott will speak about the Court Leet, followed by Shawn Dymond on the World War One project, and James Morrish will talk about the history of the town’s livestock markets, both the old and the new sites.

After a buffet lunch there will be organised walks of the town, taking in the parish church and the museum.

To round off the day there will be tea and scones in the Memorial Hall.

It is planned that there will be display stands in the hall, including the Bude Canal Trust and Bude Harbour and Canal Society, North Devon Archaeological Society and Devon Family History Society as well as various other tables and displays relating to Holsworthy.

Chief organiser Lynda Vickery said: “This is the first time that Holsworthy has held an event of this sort and we are hoping it will be a success.”
