THERE could be a 'quirky' new addition to Bude Canal if a planning application wins approval. Bude-Stratton Town Council's planning committee last Thursday recommended the go-ahead of a barge-based restaurant located on the canal, provided that conditions outlined by the Environment Agency are met. The final decision on the application rests with Cornwall Council. The proposal would see a 60x12ft barge, run as a restaurant, moored at Lower Wharf. The town council planning committee meeting decided not to object to the application. But should planning consent be granted, it requested that waste disposal be carried out between 8am and 10am. The proposed restaurant's hours of opening are understood to be 10am until 4pm, seven days a week. The Environment Agency's concerns centre on the risk of flooding in the area, and whether the necessary safety precautions would be in place to deal with conditions previously experienced on the canal.
