HOLSWORTHY Town Band is to lose its band room, which it has been using for more than 30 years.

In the next 12 to 18 months the owners, Peter, Peter and Wright Solicitors, plan to develop the site by building flats with parking underneath and have given the band notice to vacate.

Under a gentleman’s agreement the band has had use of the room rent free provided it kept it tidy and well decorated on the understanding that it would have to give it up if it were required for storage.

Band secretary, Sue Lyle has written to Holsworthy Town and Torridge District councillors for help.

Sue said: “If we can’t find anywhere suitable it might be that the band will have to fold, something that would be a huge regret and not taken lightly.”

A spokesman for Peter Peter & Wright Solicitors said: “Recent enquiries from the Band prompted a review of their use of part of our premises and we confirm that this has resulted in advance warning being given to the band of their need to look for a new venue.

“The arrangement has at all times been on a grace a favour basis on the understanding that it would last only for long as we did not have any other plans. We suspect that it was never envisaged it would last as long as it has.

“It is confirmed that the possibility of redeveloping the building in conjunction with other adjoining premises is being explored.

“We are pleased to have assisted the band for over 30 years by providing rent free accommodation and wish the band well in the future.”
