THERE is now a dedicated memory café for people with memory loss and dementia, and their careers, in Camelford.
The Conference Room of Camelford Hall was decorated with bunting, purple tablecloths and Spring daffodils to mark the launch of the Top Town Memory Café on Wednesday, March 23.
The launch was well supported, with those in attendance able to enjoy cake, tea and coffee and a glass of champagne to mark the occasion.
Entertainment was provided by Adrian Davey, who sang and played the guitar, and who offered his services to the memory cafe free of charge.
The Top Town Memory Café has been set up in collaboration with Purple Angel-Global, an organisation that promotes memory cafes and awareness of memory loss.
Memory café chairman, Jane Sleeman, said a memory café was recently set up and held at Camelford Leisure Centre, but it wasn’t an ideal location to hold such a group.
“We were very grateful to them, as what they have done is give us the opportunity to restart the cafe.”
Not only will the memory café serve Camelford, it will be available to people from the surrounding villages, such as Delabole, Boscastle, Tintagel, Davidstow, Crackington Haven and St Breward, among others,
Treasurer Louise Dean said the town and surrounding areas was crying out for such a facility.
“Launceston is the nearest one and Bude and Wadebridge, but there’s nothing here that covers all the other areas around.
“This area of Camelford is historically known as Top Town and that’s why we’ve decided to call it Top Town Memory Café.”
Users are able to drop in to the cafes when they wish.
A number of special events are in the pipeline and each cafe will be based around a certain theme, such as Camelford, spring flowers, VE Day and the Queen’s birthday.
The committee will also be organising a number of fundraising events. This was kicked off last Thursday with a successful cake sale in the Mason’s archway.
The cake sale was a great success, and £210 was raised, which will go towards future memory café activies.
The committee is made up of Jane Sleeman, chair; Jane Moore, secretary; Louise Dean, treasurer; and steering group members Jo Hoskings, Pauline Alexander and Mo Moaddel.
In addition, there are a number of volunteers on board.
The Post was delighted to offer its support and a donation to help kick start the memory café.
If you would like to get involved, or find out more, please contact either Jane Sleeman on 01840 211337 or Jane Moore on 01840 212780.
The next café will take place on Wednesday, April 13.
