A TONY Yapp masterclass plus a committed, disciplined team performance helped the All Blacks to end Otley's unbeaten home record. Yapp kept his side on the attack and didn't miss a kick all afternoon, amassing 18 points.
It was the All Blacks' experience versus Otley's youthful enthusiasm. There was not a lot between the packs with the visitors having the edge in the first half and Otley asserting themselves to good effect after the turnaround. However, the All Blacks vitally retained the ball better.
Yapp kicked an early penalty to which Murray replied ten minutes later. Having settled, the All Blacks started motoring in the second quarter. Number eight Sam Hocking, who had a cracking game, crossed after a drive and a rumbling maul from 20 metres out and Yapp converted and also landed two more penalties.
Otley rallied and their right wing Oliver Denton rounded the defence, linked with his backs and sent in flanker Joe Quinn with Murray converting. 10-16. Approaching half time from loose play All Blacks' right wing Jason Luff in a slick opportunist move, snatched up the ball and ran in from the 10-metre line. Yapp converted for a 23-10 lead.
The visitors started the second half on the attack and soon scored again, lock Dave Kimberley linking with Lord who scored wide out.
Otley responded, driving the All Blacks back in a maul for lock Howard Parr to score. 17-30. Then in a carbon copy move number eight Oliver Stedman touched down. Murray converted both tries. 24-30.
Perhaps the key moments came in a five-minute period from the hour. First Otley's fly half James Murray missed a penalty and Yapp responded with a superb kick under pressure which put his side 33-24 in front.
The spirited Otley side came again deep in injury time with full back Christian Georgiou scoring an opportunist try, kicking, charging on and gathering a lucky bounce to cross with the conversion being missed.
